Children’s House

2.8 - 6 Years

The Children’s House program offered at North Shore Montessori School adheres to the philosophy and curriculum developed and introduced by Dr. Maria Montessori. The classroom environment is enriched with the full range of Montessori didactic materials.

The Multi-Age Classroom

The Early Childhood level, for children ages 2.8 through 6 years old,  encourages preschoolers and kindergartners to explore and discover, to collaborate with classmates, and to take ownership of their education.

The Montessori Method encourages self-directed learning that promotes self-confidence, independence and critical thinking, all while fostering a child's social-emotional and intellectual growth.

The Children's House includes six areas of study: Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, Cultural, and Grace and Courtesy. A child first experiences the sense of hand-to-brain information followed by language as the children develops their skills.

The Work Cycle

The morning work cycle lays a foundation for the development of lifelong learning habits, and it gives children time to follow their work from beginning to end. The lead teacher and assistant teacher give the children lessons and follow-up work, guiding the children in how to use the Montessori materials in a prepared environment.

A Prepared Environment

Montessori classrooms feel more like home, where specially designed learning materials are displayed on open shelves, easily accessible to the children.

Teachers gently guide students in maintaining their environment, showing them how to bring materials to a table or mat and how to work with the Montessori materials, as well as the order in which the materials are returned to the shelf for the next child's use.

Our Children's House includes child-sized furniture, cozy spaces for quiet reading, reachable shelves with work available for free choice, low sinks accessible to the children, and child-sized kitchen utensils so the students can eat, prepare, and clean up snack and lunch on their own. Our classroom is filled with natural light from large windows and a patio door that opens to the play area.

From Preschooler to Kindergartner

In Children's House, a child's third year is considered the Leadership Year. During the first two years in an early childhood classroom, Montessori students look forward to their turn to be a leader.

Often called the kindergarten year, children take pride in being the oldest. They serve as role models for younger students, demonstrating leadership, critical thinking, collaboration and citizenship skills. A Montessori kindergarten student sees and feels their personal growth, as they both guide and watch younger children learn information they have mastered.

Six-year-old Leaders

Kindergartners are introduced to progressively more advanced Montessori materials and sophisticated, fascinating lessons. They experience an important period in which their previous learning from working with concrete Montessori materials begins to become permanent knowledge. As kindergartners in a multi-age classroom, they express confidence, develop self-esteem and self-sufficiency, and show responsibility.

Parent Review

“Our little guy absolutely loves his school. He is so excited to go every day. The teachers are kind and knowledgeable and teach him practical skills every day - it’s been amazing to see him doing things by himself at home, such as putting on his own jacket and throwing things away in the trash and picking up his toys. He talks about his schoolmates and teachers lovingly - it’s a great school, we truly love it.”
